Tennessee State University’s Rich Legacy of Higher Learning & Athletics

Tennessee State University’s story as a historically black college and university (HBCU) goes back to 1912, when it opened its doors as the Agricultural and Industrial State Normal School. It grew rapidly in the subsequent decades, expanding its offerings and upgrading its status to a land-grant university in 1958.

Today, the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education recognizes TSU as a “high research” institution. The university awards undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral degrees, offers nearly 80 majors, and boasts a faculty-student ratio of 17:1. Dr. Glenda Baskin Glover has served as the eighth TSU President since 2013.

On the athletics front, TSU belongs to the NCAA Division I Ohio Valley Conference. The TSU Tigers and Lady Tigers play everything from tennis, golf, and softball to football, basketball, and track-and-field, with well-packed sporting venues including Nissan and Hale stadiums and Tiger Field.
